Camping on Hunting Island

Miguel took a couple days off work this week!! Yay! So we packed up Emma and our things and headed to Hunting Island, SC to go camping.

Below are some pictures we took on our way out of Savannah...

Ahhh... I documented our drive over the scary bridge:

This is the first trip we took where we seat-belted Emma in the back for the whole drive... She really didn't like it very much. She struggled very hard to get up front and be with...

We were surrounded by the low country marshes and water everywhere! It was such a beautiful drive! I love where I live!

We drove through Beaufort, SC on our way there too. I really enjoyed Beaufort! Such a cute, fun, little town!

The drive was just soo pretty! I have to share some more pictures:

Now to the camping...

Here is our camp site below. We were the only tent campers so we had the place to ourselves! It was awesome because it felt like we really were all alone in the wilderness!

The bugs were unbelievable! So the first things we did were drench ourselves in bug spray, set up the tent, and make the fire. Okay Miguel did the last two. It's very nice to go camping with an Eagle Scout!

Emma behaved very well and L.O.V.E.D camping!!! She explored all around us but stayed very close and came when she was called.

After the tent was set up we went exploring around our campsite. On the map it looked like our site was right next to the beach, so we headed in that direction. It was more like marsh land though. We were able to walk on it because it was low tide. There were loads of tiny crabs. Emma had a blast "playing" with them!

I'm covered head to toe in attempt to have less skin to be bitten.

Next we went around the corner to find the beach. This was the first trip for Emma to the beach (minus the tiny strip of beach at Fort Pulaski). We were so excited that they let dogs go on the beach!

The weather was amazing, especially for November 1st! We put on our bathing suits, grabbed our beach chairs, and enjoyed a warm afternoon on the beach with our dog!

Emma was fascinated by sand. She discovered digging for the first time. She would dig, dig, dig, dig and then plop herself down in the hole. I guess that is a trait dogs do in the wild?

We wanted to see if Emma remembered how to swim and whether or not she was still scared of the water. I took her out there first and she was a little hesitant only at first. Then she preceded to dive in head first... well, okay, only if the waves weren't rushing towards her and as long as her feet still touched the ground.

Then Miguel got in the water with Emma and ran up and down the beach. She is so fast now! We also played frisbee with her. She was so good off of the leash! We only leashed her when other dogs walked by. I really liked this particular beach a lot because it was so empty. So few people were around.

When we got back to the campsite Miguel rebuilt the fire and Emma ran around. Whenever we gave her a treat or she found a stick she particularly favored, she would run to one spot behind a bush and sit there to chew her treasure.

Can you find the dog?
Once the fire was rebuilt Miguel and I sat down and enjoyed some beer and played the guitar. It was so nice to see Miguel in his element and fully relaxed! He is so busy with work and grad school that it is so refreshing for him to get away and let his mind relax.

For dinner Miguel taught me how to make something he calls Hoagies. Basically you take ground beef, green bell peppers, and onions and layer them one on top of the other in aluminum foil. Then you wrap it all up like a burrito and place in on the fire.

We also had sweet potatoes and corn... YUM! Oh and we also had some wine which we drank out of plastic wine glasses we got as a present from Lexi and her mom. They came in a really cute picnic bundle. I was so thankful to have them. This was the nicest dinner I had ever had camping. Miguel and I also brought marshmallows which we roasted. That is a must when camping.

I loved how pitch black it was at night. My neck hurts from staring up at all the stars. SO beautiful! The night was as dark as Emma so it was literally impossible to see her without her blinking red light.

The night was a little rough to sleep through, but we managed. I had no idea what an annoying sound raccoons make when talking to each other! Emma didn't care much for them either. But we were all exhausted so eventually fell asleep. We woke up at 6:30 to watch the sun rise. Waking up wasn't so bad. 6:30 is an hour later than we normally wake up on Tuesday mornings. Unfortunately the clouds were a little cloudy this morning so we didn't get a very grand view of the sunrise. We ventured out onto the beach at first. We had planned to cook our breakfast out there. It was FREEZING though. So we quickly returned to the car and watched the rest from there.

brrrrr

When we returned to the campsite we started our breakfast. Miguel has all these neat little camping things and made a teeny, tiny burner appear out of nowhere. We cooked onions, potatoes, and bell peppers in a pan. Then we added eggs and cheese and let it cook. Unfortunately, the little burner ran out of propane. Luckily, we had another grill with us and used that to finish cooking our breakfast.

Emma was a big helper... she helped with breakfast:

...she helped Miguel with the firewood...

... she helped break down the tent:

... and she helped with the recycling:

We had a great time but are happy to be home! We jumped in the shower as soon as we got home and are very relieved to be clean! We're resting up today for our trip to see the rocket launch tomorrow!

Boo for Wag-O-Ween

Last night was the much anticipated Wag-O-Ween. Emma, Miguel, and I all got dressed up for the event.

Emma was very excited to get going...

I couldn't keep up with Miguel and Emma on the way there... Emma is a strong little dog.

Some other pets and their costumes:

(this dog is hiding because Emma was a bully to him)

In fact, our trip was cut short because Emma had an 'attitude'. It was very frustrating and embarrassing.

This is Emma and Miguel doing the walk of shame back to the apartment...

So we put Emma up and then went to a party at our friends house

Brandie and Kyle as a kitty who ate a fish (she is five months pregnant!) and Lance Armstrong

Miguel and I went as Germans, ya.

Snookie!

Ready for Wag-O-Ween!

Tomorrow my apartment complex is having Wag-O-Ween, so we went to Petsmart today to get my Halloween costume! There were a couple of options, but most were going to be too hot for the weather here. (It's been in the low 80's this week! Someone needs to remind Savannah that it's supposed to feel like fall in late October. Come on!) So to stay cool we decided to be a jester.

I didn't handle Petsmart very well. I barked... a lot! But I got to get two new toys! New is great!
