Hilton Head 2012: Doggie Paddle

My parents dogs accompanied us on our beach vacation. We all love having the dogs around, but it was especially helpful for the golden retriever, Luke, who suffers from a high amount of anxiety, to be with his family. Though Luke constantly needs to be reassured and is hesitant about most things, he surprisingly enjoys playing in water... as long as his feet touch the ground.

If you have been reading my previous HHI blogs, you will have seen the dock and beautiful water views at the vacation house. We collectively spent many nights and hours during the day enjoying the scenery from the dock. The dogs would tag along. While my parents' Basset Hound mix, Bailey, was content to sit at our feet, Luke could often be found curiously eyeing the water with a slightly concerning look of longing. Nevertheless, we weren't too worried about Luke actually getting in the water, because, as I previously mentioned, he is a pretty fearful dog and at 99% of the day can be found, if not at my mother's feet, following closely behind.

Well, I'm sure you can tell where this is going...

Yep. Nothing is quite as funny as a highly strung-out dog stuck, literally stuck, in the mud. I couldn't stop laughing during the whole ordeal. It all started with someone noticing that my mom's 5th golden-haired limb was oddly missing. After a good bit of whistling and calling, alarm started setting in when no happy-faced golden showed up. Unfortunately, I was absent from the actual discovery part of finding Luke in the water. I showed up, along with my Sister and my camera, for the rescue end of things. Thank God for husbands who have "man strength".

Miguel, with some help from my mom, was eventually able to wrangle and lift the 70 lb Luke to the lower dock. Despite his breeding, Luke is not the best swimmer, however, to his credit that puppy can run pretty quickly if he wants to! As soon as his muddy paws hit the dock Luke shot up the ramp faster than I've seen him move in years! Once back to "safety" on the higher part of the dock, Luke began the difficult job of attempting to remove the sticky marsh floor from his fur.

This was a strenuous job. We chuckled some more after seeing the trails of dog prints all throughout the low-tide marsh. He had been very busy! Poor thing!

To add a little bit more comedy to the situation, Luke then attempted to wipe off more mud using the edge of the pool. Perhaps he was inspired by the multiple nights of Olympic diving, or maybe he was just so flustered by his unintentional swim, either way Luke flipped into the pool.

Hahaha! Look at that face! Luke was just so spent. As my brother-in-law, Jared, put it, Luke looks as though he is thinking, "This day sucks". With the new knowledge that Luke was, in fact, able to actually swim, we tried coaxing him into the pool to play. However,  after being rescued from the water for the second time within minutes, he wasn't having any of it.

Well, I guess the whole event just gave Luke another reason to be anxious, but we sure did appreciate the laugh! And this time it wasn't Jack's antics that led to a funny dog story! Woo hoo for that win ;)

Hilton Head 2012: Karis Edition

The best thing about vacation is the beach Karis! I'm so glad I got to spend so much time with my baby niece! This is only the 3rd time I've seen her in her short 6 months of life and I loved getting to know her and see her little personality come alive!

Some things I learned about Karis this week:

1) Girl likes to be on the go! If she's not in someones arms lunging forward, she is working very hard on crawling! Which she can almost do btw! <--- proud Aunt!

2) She likes to be WITH and to be the center of the party! All eyes on Karis please! Karis is very proud of almost everything she does and looks around to see if her adorning audience is watching. Which of course we are and we clap and cheer her on. Karis is definitely a people person! She wants to be with all the time. This little girl will fight of her nodding head and drowsy eyes just for the chance to stay up and be with!

3) Bouncing is FUN! So is sticking out our tongue!

4) Adventures in solid food is exciting! Especially when Uncle Miguel is helping... though it may also be a little messy...

5) Okay maybe all eating solid food is fun and messy!

Messy little girl

But happy little girl!

6) iPad games on Aunt Laura's iPad are SUPER fun! The iPad provided Karis with many opportunities of pride and clapping from her audience! Karis recorded her first piano composition as well as drew her first art masterpiece. She also popped many bubbles =)

7) Being a big enough girl to ride on Daddy's shoulders is the BEST! This is a great place to observe the world from and also a great pedestal to be seen and adored by her many admirers!

Look at that cute, little baby butt!

Of course I could go on and on and on.... there is so much Karis cuteness! I'll have to settle with just letting her be a part of the additional HHI blog posts to come.

We miss her SO much already!!!!

Hilton Head 2012: Splish Spash

Waking up and walking out the back door to this view makes me pretty content to relax/sunbathe all day long!

However, not everyone is good with remaining motionless...

Miguel and Dad are much more interested in playing "catch the football" games than laying around. And then there is this little bug:

Pure Adorableness!

Karis is not a huge fan of "still". She wants to be on the move. All. The. Time.! Which of course I love because she is very willing for someone to carry her around so she can investigate and explore.

Yeah, she's pretty much the star attraction around here! And she LOVES the water! She's a baby fish! So happy to be playing and splashing and just being generally adored.

What did I do in the pool before there was a baby to entertain?

Watching the Kar Bear

It's been really nice sorta being "disconnected" from the world. Besides watching the Olympics in the evening and the occasional blog post we've been outside the reach of technology. I suppose it helps that the internet keeps going in and out here. So we've had to find other ways to entertain ourselves. The boys have taken to "fishing". I'll remove the "'s when they actually catch something ;) But it makes for pretty pictures and a relaxing time...
